FARMINGTON, NEW YORK – December 2, 2021 – Leonard’s Express – a leading transportation services provider offering refrigerated trucking, dry van, warehousing, and freight brokerage services – is one of the top thirty “greenest fleets” in the U.S., according to Heavy Duty Trucking (HDT) magazine. The annual award honors leaders in sustainability efforts among all sizes and types of trucking fleets in areas such as fleet electrification, alternative and renewable fuels, cleaner-burning engines, fuel efficiency, freight efficiency, “green” facilities, and testing new sustainable technologies.
“Leonard’s Express is a big believer in trying out new technology and tools to save fuel and reduce emissions,” said Deborah Lockridge, editor in chief of Heavy Duty Trucking magazine and Truckinginfo.com. “For instance, a new solar/electric trailer hybrid the company is testing on three units charges the batteries from the axle while the truck is on the road. While the trailer is dropped, it uses both the stored battery charge as well as solar panels for power. It’s trying to get a tractor with a Hyliion hybrid drive-train to test, as well. SPI.Systems’ SPI Exhaust Reaction System, or SPIER, alters the chemistry of combustion through reuse of exhaust gases to cut emissions and boost fuel economy. The company also uses more traditional methods: in-cab driver coaching from Vnomics, idling and mpg trend reports, new-hire training, APUs (both diesel and electric), tractor and trailer aero add-ons, and a fuel bonus for drivers.”
In addition to Leonard’s Express, this year’s list of Top Green Fleets includes Amazon, Anheuser-Busch, DHL, FedEx, J.B. Hunt, PepsiCo, Saia, Schneider, and UPS. “We are honored to be recognized for our commitment to environmental sustainability alongside such iconic brands,” said Ken Johnson, Leonard’s Express CEO. “We strive to be early and frequent adopters of technology to deliver greater value to our customers while maintaining our status as an employer of choice and a responsible member of the communities where we live and work.”
The editors of HDT have been recognizing the top green fleets in the country since 2013. Winners are chosen annually both from nominations/applications as well as from news releases and editorial coverage throughout the year. “A number of trends are accelerating moves to alternative fuels and drivetrains, as well as increasing focus on fuel economy and freight efficiency, which you can see reflected in this year’s honorees,” explained Lockridge. “Recent efforts are given more weight, and we also look for companies that are leaders in sharing their knowledge with and serving as an inspiration for others in the trucking industry.”
Earlier this year, Heavy Duty Trucking also recognized Leonard’s Express with its HDT Truck Fleet Innovator Award. For more information, please visit the Leonard’s Express website.
