The Power of Partnership

Fairness, accountability, respect and trust pave the road to success.
Leonard’s Express takes great pride in offering a wide range of transportation and logistics solutions tailored to meet the diverse needs of shippers. It’s one of the many reasons Leonard’s consistently ranks among the top refrigerated carriers in North America and is recognized by Food Shippers of America (FSA) as a Top Food Chain Provider.

“Brokerage services are a key part of our solutions,” said Leonard’s Express Vice President of Logistics Tom O’Donnell. “By expertly matching shippers with the best freight haulers available, we play a critical role in the supply chain, delivering food to store shelves quickly and efficiently for maximum freshness.”

Leonard’s Express transports and warehouses both temperature-controlled and dry goods with a focus on truckload services. Its fleet of approximately 650 trucks and 1,000 trailers, strategically paired with its freight brokerage network, allows Leonard’s to provide consistent capacity while also being nimble enough to flex to meet customers’ needs. Building and maintaining strong partnerships with other carriers is key to providing superior service.

Chicago-based Wingo Transportation has been one of these carrier partners since 2017. In 2024, Wingo ranked #6 among Leonard’s top 50 carriers in terms of load count and revenue. Like Leonard’s Express, integrity and fairness are core values for Wingo. “We prioritize safety, reliable service, and open communication,” said Wingo Vice President Alex Siniavin. “We’re honest, and we always stand behind our work. These shared values are critical to working with a broker because there are literally hundreds of things that could hurt a relationship.”

Fairness, Accountability, and Communication

Like Leonard’s Express, Wingo Transportation specializes in temperature-controlled shipping, ensuring the safe transport of perishable goods. Their niche is fresh fruit and a lot of their work originates from the Port of Wilmington, Delaware, a full service deepwater port and marine terminal complex that handles more than 400 vessels and six million tons of import/export cargo annually. The process  of moving produce from the port should be straightforward. Of course, things don’t always go as planned. Recently, when Wingo delivered a truckload of watermelons, the receiver rejected the entire load.

“Our job,” said Siniavin, “is to pick up the truckload and bring it to its destination. If we did this right, we’re entitled to get full pay for our service. But the receiver looked at the melons and said, ‘You know what? They’re not round enough for us. You’ll have to claim it on your insurance. We picked up the produce at the port and delivered it intact and on time. It’s not the carrier’s fault if the melons aren’t round enough.”

“At that point, you need to involve the broker,” Siniavin explained. “Sometimes a broker completely takes the side of the shipper because they want to please their customer. This can  create fear,  uncertainty and doubt over whether we’re going to get paid. But we were dealing with Leonard’s Express, so I knew I didn’t have to worry. They stepped in and resolved the issues between the shipper and the receiver. They defended us, the carrier, while also making sure the other parties were satisfied.”

Maintaining such a high degree of trust empowers Wingo Transportation to address challenging situations creatively. “We used to haul bananas from the Port of Wilmington to Indiana. At one point, I would say every third load of bananas was really green, and the customer wanted to reject the load,” Siniavin explained. “With some brokers I would be afraid of being held liable for the condition of the load. But Leonard’s Express guided us to donate the bananas. They actually found us a church that would accept the bananas. Leonard’s Express handled that situation well, and we were not hurt.”

Clear communication is key to any successful partnership. “In this business, when there’s a challenge, communication and collaboration has got to be top notch,” said O’Donnell. “Sometimes, a lot of people have to get involved very quickly. If a carrier is holding onto a load they’re losing revenue on the tractor, and nobody wants that. So, we want to quickly reach a decision that’s good for all parties.”

More Loads, Less Stress

We appreciate Leonard’s Express’ efforts to provide Wingo with a steady, reliable flow of loads that matches our capabilities and preferences. This consistency fosters trust and ultimately improves overall efficiency. – Wingo Vice President Alex Siniavin
Another key to successful, sustainable relationships between brokers and carriers comes down to consistent workloads. “We need to have confidence that we will have certain lanes available to us on a weekly or monthly basis, so we can plan and schedule loads well in advance,” said Siniavin. “We appreciate Leonard’s Express’ efforts to provide Wingo with a steady, reliable flow of loads that matches our capabilities and preferences. This consistency fosters trust and ultimately improves overall efficiency.”

Siniavin also appreciates the state-of-the-art tools Leonard’s Express uses to enable drivers to work smarter, instead of harder. “Every single unit in our fleet has sophisticated tracking software, and our drivers know how to use it,” he said. “It’s super accurate and can track whether a truck is running, how fast it’s going, whether it’s idling, and other performance metrics.”

Mutual Respect and Trust

Tom O’Donnell is extremely satisfied with the partnership Leonard’s Express has forged with Wingo Transportation. “I have never heard a bad thing about Wingo Transportation. Wingo is one of our most versatile carriers. They work a lot out of the Port of Wilmington, they do short-range moves, and they do some over-the-road work for us as well. They’re a well-rounded carrier that we’ve partnered with for a long time. We trust Wingo completely. We know we can count on their leadership team, frontline managers, and drivers to make the right decisions and communicate important information promptly.”
Unexpected challenges are a fact of life in the trucking industry, as O’Donnell is quick to point out. “They’re going to happen in this business, but it’s how we react to them that’s important. Wingo handles every situation professionally. You can’t put a price tag on that.”
